Parent friendly jobs

30 September 2008

While the Federal government is considering a nationwide paid maternity leave scheme, some jobs will always be friendlier to parents than others. Certain government jobs and teaching jobs can offer parents excellent conditions for raising children, but even some private sector jobs can be understanding about the desire to raise children.

With the currently proposed paid maternity leave plan advantaging some while potentially disadvantaging others, it is important to look at the overall effect of a national paid maternity leave scheme. First of all, it has the potential to reduce the pay gap between male and female workers by reducing the penalties to women for taking some time off to have children.

Secondly, while people in jobs that already have paid maternity leave may find themselves worse off in terms of the benefits they are entitled to, they may find their career prospects will improve. This is because if more workers can take paid maternity leave, it should become seen as part of a normal career rather than being seen by some employers as taking advantage of a benefit.
