Balancing multiple jobs

29 September 2008

When taking on multiple jobs, you must be careful to maintain a proper balance. Many people when taking on multiple jobs look at the time they have available, and if there is space free, they imagine they have balanced their life correctly. Unfortunately, this is likely to lead to stress, poor health and distance from friends and family.

While you are balancing multiple jobs, it is important that you take leisure time into account as well. While there are people who like to believe that the need to rest is a sign of weakness and can be avoided, this is delusional. Everyone has a different capacity for how much work they can take on, but overestimating your ability to do this could lead to a situation in which you feel too responsible to each of your employers to quit any of your jobs, yet you will be suffering from a lack of rest.

As you'll have to budget time for leisure, don't cheat yourself by imagining that anytime you aren't working counts as rest. Travelling to and from jobs, for instance, is hardly restful so you should budget time you must travel as part of doing your jobs rather than as time you've been resting.
