September was a bad month for jobs

10 October 2008

There are fewer people in full time jobs in Australia since September. Around 15,400 full time jobs were lost last month, bringing the Australian unemployment rate up to 4.3% from 4.1% in August. This is not unexpected, as many experts have been predicting that economic woes would cause the jobless rate to increase.

The number of part time jobs available has increased, with around 17,700 new positions in part time jobs being filled last month. This stopped the jobless rate from becoming even worse, but competition for new jobs could become tighter as the economy continues through a rocky period with no end in sight.
