Maid Jobs

A maid or maidservant works as a domestic services employee. The main responsibility of a maid is to help employers with daily household chores. Depending on the employer, a maid's job can be very flexible. There are some maids who are only required to work on weekends, while others work weekdays. On the other hand, there are employers who offer room and board to their maids so that the maid can work for longer hours when needed.

What to Expect in a Maid Job

The working conditions and tasks of maids vary greatly, depending on the needs of their employer. Some of the factors that have an impact on the duties of a maid include the house size, family size, ages of the family members, and whether or not there are house pets. For the most part, the duties of maids are similar despite the factors mentioned above. Common duties that can be found in a maid job include the following:

  • Cleaning - cleaning of rooms, bathrooms, cars, furniture, kitchen, etc.
  • Laundry - washing, drying, ironing, folding clothes and placing them in their respective closets
  • General house chores - dish washing, garbage disposal, changing of bedsheets, etc.
  • Child care - babysitting and taking care of children while parents are out or busy
  • Pet care - feeding, bathing, walking, and cleaning after pets
  • Errands running - running to the grocery, drug store, etc. for small errands
  • Cooking - preparing meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and other snacks
  • Other tasks - caring for elderly family members, gardening, and other specified tasks

Requirements and Qualifications

Employers usually accept applicants who have high school education or less. Maids must be experienced with house chores and other daily tasks in order to be successful in their field. Literacy, numeracy, and communication skills are needed in order to follow instruction and work closely with employers.
