Role Description

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic communications professional to amplify the voices of local communities who are fighting to protect their communities, farmland, water resources and the environment from the destructive impacts of the coal and gas industries. It is a new, exciting, senior role that includes high-level strategy development through to hands on implementation of media and communication strategies.

Key responsibilities

  1. Provide communications strategy and media support for grassroots community groups around Australia;
  2. Manage communications and media strategy for The Sunrise Project.

Key tasks

  1. Develop and implement communications, messaging and media strategies for campaigns;
  2. Develop and conduct communications and media training for community groups;
  3. Identify powerful grassroots stories and amplify them through online and traditional media;
  4. Develop social media strategies that enable community advocates to reach out to wider audiences;
  5. Create and maintain a database of images, video and other communications materials;
  6. Media monitoring ????? ?????;
  7. Build and maintain relationships with relevant journalists;
  8. Manage the production of occasional reports and briefings including The Sunrise Project annual report.

Skills and experience

  1. Minimum 3 years experience as a communications professional;
  2. Demonstrated understanding of and experience developing research based communications strategy including framing and message development;
  3. Excellent understanding of the Australian media landscape (on and offline);
  4. High level social media and online communications skills;
  5. Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work well in small teams;
  6. High level of initiative and the ability to manage projects from inception to completion;
  7. Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide diversity of stakeholders from different walks of life;
  8. Demonstrated passion for environmental justice and for action on climate change.

Other requirements

  1. Willingness to travel;
  2. Drivers license;
  3. This is intended to be a full time position, however part-time or job-share arrangements may be considered for the right applicant;
  4. This position is based in Sydney.


This is a senior position and a competitive salary will be offered to attract suitably experienced candidates.


The position will report to the Executive Director.
